[BI Connector v 6.x] Connect Power BI to Oracle OTBI, OAC, OAS, OBIEE, Fusion Analytics Data Models using Import - Step-by-Step User Guide

BI Connector v6.x and above provides connectivity from Power BI to Oracle Data Models. At this time, the Import mode is supported.


Following is a general tutorial for connecting from Power BI to Oracle Data Models (in the following applications) via the BI Connector using Import mode.


  • Oracle Transactional Business Intelligence (OTBI) that's available as a part of:
    • Oracle Fusion Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Applications
    • Oracle Fusion Supply Chain Management (SCM) Applications
    • Oracle Fusion Human Capital Management (HCM) Applications
    • Oracle Fusion Customer Experience (CX) Applications
  • Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC)
  • Oracle Analytics Server (OAS)
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE)
  • Oracle OPERA Cloud
  • Taleo
  • NetSuite



Pre-requisites

  1. Microsoft Power BI Desktop December 2018 update or the latest version.
  2. BI Connector Desktop Edition for Microsoft PowerBI. (Step-by-Step Installation Guide for BI Connector Desktop Edition for Microsoft PowerBI)

Connecting from Power BI to Oracle Data Models


Launch PowerBI Desktop

Launch Power BI Desktop. Click Get Data and select the More option.

Click on Get Data in Power BI

  

Select BI Connector

 In the Get Data dialog, search for BI Connector and select the BI Connector and click Connect.

Enter DSN Information

  • Open the BI Connector application, click on the Data Source menu on the left side pane, and copy the Data Source Name for the Data Model connection that was created.

  • In the Power BI instance that was opened earlier, paste the Data Source Name (that you copied in the previous step from the BI Connector application) on the Enter the ODBC Data Source Name(DSN) box. Next, select Import, and click on the Ok button.

  • If prompted to enter the credentials, please enter the Oracle application's username and password, and click on

Connect to the Database and Select the Table

Now the navigator would open. Click on the Database name to connect to the required data.

Click the arrow on the left to navigate to the Data Model of your interest


Open the sub-folders, until you see the Table you created out of the Data Model in the BI Connector application. Note that the first time you connect to the Data Model it could take a couple of seconds to show the sub-folder structure. Select the check box of the table you want to visualize and click Load.

Select the fields to visualize

Upon loading the data, you can pull the columns to the reporting canvas and start visualizing your Oracle Data Models data in Power BI.

Choose a different visualization

Choose the desired visualization and you have now successfully created your Power BI Visualization for OBIEE reports data.
